A service will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 pm at the Lake Park Cemetery Chapel at 1459 East Midlothian Blvd. in Youngstown for William Gary Opsitnik, 69, who passed away February 26 after an extended illness.
Bill was born September 3, 1946, in Youngstown, a son of William and Marjorie Queen Opsitnik. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1964. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in the Vietnam conflict and was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer Second Class.
After his service to his country, Bill was hired at General Motors where he retired as a millright and a member of the UAW Local 1112 after almost 42 years of employment. While he was working and raising his children, he earned a bachelors degree in business from Youngstown State University.
Bill married Patricia Sue O'Dea on August 2, 1969. They had two children William (Milissa) C. Opsitnik and Katherine (David Pearson) M. Miller. Bill and Patti also had two grandchildren they were very proud of, W. Cody Opsitnik and Alissa A. Opsitnik.
In addition to raising and providing for his family, Bill was very active in his community. He was a member of the Optomist Club, the Jay Cees, was active in the Springfield Youth Baseball Association and a Cub Scout leader. Bill joined the New Middletown Village Fire Department in 1981 and retired as Fire Chief of the Village of New Middletown in 2010. During his tenure as Fire Chief, he served on the Mahoning County Hazardous Material Advisory Committee and was a past President of the Mahoning County Fire Chief's Association.
In his spare time, Bill enjoyed spending time with his family, riding his motorcycle and catching up on any cowboy show he could find.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William Opsitnik and his wife Patricia. He is survived by his children and grandchildren, his mother, Marjorie Opsitnik, his sister Mitzi (Carl) Galterio, and nieces Cassidy and Rebecca Oyler.
