North Lima – A prayer service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Nicholas Church, both in Struthers for Virginia "Gina" Scavnicky, 90 of The Inn at Glenellen, formerly of Struthers, who passed away Thursday afternoon at Hospice House.
Gina was born November 23, 1926 in Lowellville, Ohio, a daughter of Samuel and Angeline Rotz Matricardi.
She lived in the area her entire life and was a homemaker. She was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Nicholas Church and belonged to the "Red Hats" Club.
Gina was known for her Italian cooking. Some of her specialties included wedding soup, homemade pastas, pizza, pizzelles, among others. When you visited her, you were always greeted with a cup of coffee, and whatever food she had on hand. If she didn't have any food to offer she was cooking something for you to eat.
Gina married Michael Scavnicky on October 10, 1947 and he passed away of April 25, 2014.
She leaves one son, Gerald Scavnicky of Boardman; two daughters, Diane (Gene) Marra of Salem, OH; Michele (Steve) Richards of Poland, OH; five brothers, Patsy Petrock of Struthers, Fred Matricardi of Boardman, Sam Matricardi of Lowellville, James Matricardi of Struthers and Donald (Doris) Matricardi of Poland; two grandchildren Derek (Michelle) Scavnicky of Tampa, FL and Courtney Richards of Poland; two great grandchildren Michael and Brooke Scavnicky.
Gina was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Michael Petrock, John and Lawrence Matricardi and one grandson Gerald Scavnicky, Jr.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Glenellen for the care and support they showed to Gina and also to Hospice House for their compassion.
Friends may call on Monday, Dec. 19th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers.
