North Lima – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Nicholas Church for Mary K. DeGenova, 93, a resident of the Assumption Village in North Lima, who died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center following a brief illness.
Mary was born March 24, 1921, in East Liverpool, the daughter of Phillip and Mary Flesch Powell. Following the death of her mother in 1923 from complications of the flu contracted in the 1918 flu pandemic, she was adopted and raised by her maternal aunts Barbara and Ethel Flesch. After graduation from Seton Hill College in 1943 with a B.A. in Spanish, she came to the area to teach at Struthers High School, where she continued to teach until her retirement in 1980. She was a long time resident of Struthers and a member of the St. Nicholas Church until she moved to the Assumption Village in 2008.
She married the late Joseph P. DeGenova on July 12, 1948.
She leaves a son Richard P. (Phyllis Gallas) of Poland, a daughter Barbara Roberts (Gary) of New Castle and grandchildren Angela DeGenova of Medina, Joseph Roberts of State College, PA, Rebecca Roberts of Atlanta, GA, and Natalie DeGenova of Poland. Mary K. also leaves in-laws Sue DeGenova Hendricks, Antoinette DeGenova Glass, Frances DeGenova and Steve Dobozy.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick DeGenova.
Mary was known for her excellence in teaching and her devotion to her family. Throughout her teaching career and also following her retirement, students she had inspired continued to visit and correspond with her. However, nothing gave her more pleasure than spending time with her children and grandchildren. She bore the burdens of declining physical and mental abilities with dignity, strength and humor.
Friends may call at the Clemente Funeral in Struthers from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.
A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. prior to the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that material contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Contributions can be made online at www.stjude.org or mailed to St. Jude Place in Memphis, TN 38105.
