Obituary

New Middletown - Marilyn went to be with her Lord peacefully at the Masternick Memorial Nursing Home on February 3, 2014.

She was born in Youngstown on April 28, 1925 to Raymond H. and Eleanor Burr Harris, the first of four children.

Marilyn was a 1943 graduate of Scienceville High School. Soon after graduation, she was one of the first women to be hired by Republic Steel to replace men who were called to serve in World War II. She operated an overhead crane that lifted red hot ingots out of furnaces, which was quite a feat for an 18 year old girl. In 1945, when the women were replaced by the returning veterans, she was employed at Moyer's Manufacturing, where she worked until she married and started a family.

In later later years, Marilyn worked for the Springfield Local School systems as a cook, until she retired in 1983. She attended the Free Methodist Church in New Middletown for many years. Growing up, she loved to dance, and also took ballet lessons for her own enjoyment. She spent many vacations at Geneva-on-The-Lake. She loved the water, and spent many years swimming at Club South.

Marilyn leaves to cherish her memory a daughter Kathleen Martin of New Middletown; a sister Dona Hammond of Boardman; two grandsons, Christopher Martin of Poland and Justin Martin of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; two nieces Cynthia Walker of New Springfield and Jessica (John) Phillips of Poland, and one nephew, Mark Vera of North Palm Beach, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a baby boy who died at birth; a sister Frances Reiter and a brother, Leon Harris, who made his home with her, both of New Middletown.

The family would like to thank the staff at Masternick Memorial Healthcare Center for the excellent care they provided during Marilyn's stay.
