Obituary

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 5, at 11:00 am, at  Christ Our Savior Parish / St. Nicholas Church in Struthers for Joseph M. Flora, Jr., 84, who passed away at home on August 2, 2016. Joe was born in Lowellville, Ohio, on April 1, 1932, the youngest son of Joseph and Julia Butch Flora.  He graduated from Lowellville High School in 1950 where he participated for the "Lowellville Rockets" in baseball, basketball, football, bowling, and was a member of the band and choir.  Joe has been remembered by many for over sixty years for his "famous shot" at South Field House. He enlisted in the Untied States Air Force in 1952, was a S/Sgt and served on the 69th Pilotless Guided Missile Bomber (Matador) during the Korean War and he served until 1956, serving the last one and one half years in Germany. Joe worked at LTV Steel and several other steel mills during the closing periods of 1978.  He retired from LTV in 1978 and worked for ten years at his favorite job as a maintenance man at St. Nicholas Church and school. Joe married his wife of 62 years, the former Eileen Higgins, on May 15, 1954, and became a member of the St. Nicholas / Christ Our Savior Church where he was a faithful and active member for 57 years.  Joe was also a cancer survivor of 25 years. Joe loved fishing and woodworking and spent many hours in his "shop" that he loved sharing with others.  He loved traveling throughout the states, especially making many trips to Texas.  He also loved family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them, especially attending special family functions. Joe loved the Cavs and Indians, but most especially enjoyed the Rockets and Wildcats where he had special seats at the basketball and football games for many years.  "To Know Him is to Love Him". Joe was a member of the Lowellville American Legion Post #247, Lowellville Senior Citizens, Holy Name Society, Altar and Rosary Society, and was a former member of the Lowellville Rod and Gun Club and the Hope Group of St. Elizabeth Hospital. Joe leaves his wife and best friend of 62 years, his sons Robert J. (Ilene) of Houston, TX, and Daniel J. of Struthers, grandchildren Matthew, Megan, and Michael of Houston, TX, and Marc of Campbell; sister-in-law, Norma Higgins of Poland and Margaret Schwab of Struthers, brothers-in-law, William J. (Margaret) Higgins of Struthers and Michael DiCicco of Boardman and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph W. Flora; brothers, Frank (Laverne), Theodore (Violet), and Anthony (Theresa); sisters, Helen (Michael) Volsko and Ann (James) DeMain; sister-in-law, Marjorie DiCicco, brother-in-law, William Schwab. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Hospice of the Valley for their kind and compassionate care of Joe. Friends may call on Thursday, August 4, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers, and one hour prior to the mass at Christ Our Savior / St. Nicholas Church from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Friday, August 5.
