Services: A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday Nov. 13,2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Our Savior Parish/St. Nicholas Church and 9:30 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home, both in Struthers.
Visitation: Friends may call on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers.
Hubbard-John B. Pape, 94, passed away on Friday morning. John was born on July 28, 1918 in Farrell, PA, a son of William and Jeanette Cardille Pape and was a lifelong area resident. He was a Quality Control Supervisor for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company and reitred in 1978. John married Rosemary Conti on Nov. 23, 1938 and she passed away Sept. 24, 2002. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was discharged as a Second Lieutenant and earned the Victory Medal and a Purple Heart. John graduated from Bessemer High School in 1936. He was a graduate of Youngstown College and earned an Associate Degree in Metallurgy. He was a member of the Mahoning Valledy Industrial Management Association. He was a successful baseball player and played Triple A baseball and played for several minor league teams. After traveling for several years, he returned home to play for the East Side Civics, among other teams. He later became President of the Old Timers Association. John was inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame and was elected to the Ohio Baseball Man of the Year. One of his proudest achievements was that he spearheaded the School for the Mentally Challenged and served on the Leonard Kurtz School Board. John served on the Struthers Board of Education and was president from 1968 to 1969. John was a very dedicated husband, father and brother. He leaves one daughter, Loretta (Gene) Swartz of Hubbard;one sister Janet of Atlanta and three grandchildren John and Daryl Swartz and Gina Haines. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rosemary, one son Thomas; one brother Joseph and one sister Rosemarie.
