Obituary

NEW MIDDLETOWN –A Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown for Germaine Scahill, 76, of New Middletown, Ohio passed away on July 8, 2016 after a brief illness. Germaine was born on Oct. 13, 1938, the youngest of three daughters of Sadie and James Vimmerstedt. She graduated in 1956 from Ursuline High School in Youngstown, Ohio and also attended Youngstown College. She worked as a proofreader among other positions in the advertising department at Strouss department store in Youngstown for many years. Germaine was such a stickler for correctly spelled words and often found misspelled words on billboards, TV commercials and newspaper ads. Of course the ads she proofed for Strouss' during the '70s and '80s never had any misspellings. On Sept. 14, 1963, she married Robert "Bob" Scahill, and together they raised their only son, Paul. She later worked at St. Paul's Catholic Church in New Middletown, where she assisted with the Religious Education program. Germaine was a loving and devoted wife and mother and a talented artist who enjoyed singing in the church choir. She was a faithful member of the church, and she and Bob had "reserved" seats in the back row. She kept her mind sharp by working crossword puzzles with her husband-he'd start them and she'd finish them. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, such as sitting on her deck or watching "ghost shows" on TV or reading mystery novels by Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton. She had eclectic taste in music ranging from Mozart and Tony Bennett to Dave Brubeck and Adam Levin of Maroon 5. In recent years, Germaine doted on her only grandson, Nick,  spoiling him with lots of love. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Joan Clarke and Gloria Hynes, niece Mary Claire Hynes and nephew Tommy Hynes. She is survived by her husband, Bob Scahill, son Paul Scahill (Eileen) and grandson Nick Scahill of Columbus, Ohio, along with 8 nieces and 16 nephews and her wonderful friends Helen and Jim Parry and Nancy Kennedy, who have been so loving and supportive during this difficult time. The family would like thank the entire staff at Vibra Hospital in Boardman for the tender loving care they gave to Germaine. Friends may call  from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, July 12 at Clemente Funeral Home, 10170 Main Street, New Middletown, Ohio and from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Monday July 13 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 10143 Main Street, New Middletown, Ohio immediately preceding the funeral Mass. Private burial at Zion Cemetery in New Middletown. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Germaine's memory to the fund to purchase a statue of the Blessed Mother Mary at St. Paul the Apostle Church.
