Father Nicholas Ross Shori passed away at his home on April 20, 2016 at the age of 68. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, friend, educator, mentor, counselor, and servant of God.
Nicholas was born in Canton, Ohio on March 11, 1948 to Gulielmo and Rose (Marcoaldi) Shori. He attended St. Anthony School, Pleasant View and Middlebranch Schools. After two years at Central Catholic High School, he entered the high school division of St. Gregory Seminary in Cincinnati. He continued his college studies there and progressed to Mount St. Mary of the West Seminary, also in Cincinnati where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1970 and a master's degree in theology in 1973. He served one year as student body president. He was ordained into the priesthood on June 8, 1974, by the Most Reverend James Malone, Bishop of Youngstown, in the chapel of Walsh University in North Canton.
Following ordination, he served as assistant pastor at St. Luke Parish, Boardman, from 1974-1976. He served on the faculty of Cardinal Mooney High School from 1976-1978. From 1978-1985, he served as director of pastoral care services at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. He was appointed to his first pastorate at St. Robert Parish in Cortland in 1985.
He assumed the additional responsibility of diocesan liaison to the charismatic renewal in 1987, having been involved in the movement for several years. In 1988 he returned to St. Elizabeth Hospital as a part-time chaplain while also serving as associate pastor of St. Charles Parish in Boardman. In 1989 he became a full time chaplain and again pastoral care director at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
In 1993, he was appointed pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in New Middletown, OH where he remained until his 2010 appointment as Director of Implementation of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan. In addition, he assumed the role of Director of Continuing Education of Priests. In 2013 he was appointed Director of the Office of Evangelization with the responsibility of continuing the diocesan parish reconfiguration plan throughout the Youngstown Dioceses. He remained in that position until his resignation for reasons of health in March 2016.
Over the years, he served as temporary administrator at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Lowellville, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Niles, and Holy Trinity East Liverpool, in addition to his diocesan responsibilities. He dedicated many years of ministry to Ohio's death row prison inmates. He was a member of the Priests' Personnel Board, the Presbyteral Council, and Dean of Mahoning South Deanery. He taught Medical Ethics to Mercy Medical Nursing Students from 2004 to the present and proudly served as Chaplain to the Springfield Township Police Department. Throughout his life, he enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends.
Nicholas is preceded in death by his father Gulielmo Shori, grandparents Rosato and Angelina Marcoaldi, Rita and Joseph Shori and beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. Left to honor his memory is his mother Rose (New Middletown), siblings Donald Shori (Bradenton, Fla.), Michael (Teressa Patterson) Shori (North Canton), sister Janet (Michael) Rinefierd (Dublin), nieces and nephews Bethany (Erich) Leipold (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Carleigh Rinefierd (Chicago, IL), Erica (Columbus), Michael Nicholas, and Philip Shori (Canton), great niece and nephew Audra Rose and Dawson Leipold (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), and countless loving relatives and friends; all who adore him and have benefited and will continue to benefit from having him in their lives.
