Struthers – A memorial service will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, July  16, at Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers for Edwin Eugene "Gene" Apgar, Sr., 73, who died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown on July 12.

Gene was born October 8, 1950, in Mount Orab, OH, to Russell and Gwendolyn Rice Apgar. He served in the Marine Corps from 1970 until 1974.  He then served in the Airforce Reserves and the Army National Guard.  He was a devoted and proud member of the military. Gene ran the Marine Corps Ship Stores and served in the honor guard locally and at the Ohio Western Reserve Military National Cemetery in Rittman, OH, where he will be interred.  He was a volunteer for the fire department in Georgetown, OH, and the Lowellville Rod and Gun Club. He took great joy in life and loved fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking, tinkering, and turning wood. He also loved eagles and the national pride that they represent.

Gene leaves his wife the former Diana L. Jones, whom he married May 23, 2003, and his stepson Tyler (Meanie) Arranz.  He also leaves three sons Edwin E."Geno" (Cayla Beckett ) Apgar, Jr., Raymond Apgar (girlfriend Erin Teubner) and Sam (Larissa Moorenweiser ) Apgar, four brothers Sonny (Terry Fox), Blare, Howard and Russell Apgar,  two sisters Margaret Apgar and Shirley (Ryan) Reynolds, ten grandchildren Peyton, Alexis, Adyson, Shelby, Gage, Shyanne, Colin, Dakota, Hannah, Savannah, three great grandchildren Oliver, Scarlett, and Scarlett and three step grandchildren Trenton, Jake and Joseph and four step great grandchildren Abigail, Tucker, Clayton, Braelynn.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a stepdaughter Patty Apgar, a stepson Tony Sams, his brother Kenny, his sister Marcella Neu and two step grandchildren Stephanie and Zachary Howell.

Gene's family request that in lieu of flowers donations in his name be made to Tri State Marine Detachment #494, at 152 Argyle Avenue in Boardman, OH, 44512-2316 or to the Disabled American Veterans local chapter Youngstown #2 at 1610 Idaho Road in Austintown, OH  44515.

Friends may call on July 16, Tuesday, at the Clemente Funeral Home at 700 Fifth Street in Struthers from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
