Services: Services will be held on Monday at 12:30 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home and a mass of celebration will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Our Savior (St. Nicholas Church) 802 Fifth Street, both in Struthers.
Visitation: Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Clemene Funeral Home in Struthers.
STRUTHERS - Edward J. Slifka passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 89. He was the son of the late Paul and Mary (Mattie) of Youngstown, Ohio. Mr. Slifka joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939, serving for two years. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant upon discharge in January 1946. While in the Marine Corp. Mr. Slifka served in the 5th Marine Division, 28th Regiment, received the Purple Heart for wounds received in the Battle for Iwo Jima, March 22, 1945. Mr. Slifka also served in the USMC during the Korean War in 1951. Mr. Slifka, also known as (Lefty), was a crane operator at Republic Steel Corp. for 36 years. He was a local golfer and made two holes in one on local golf courses. Ed married the former Marjorie Holdsworth at Camp Lejuene, NC in 1943; she preceded him in death on May 27, 1993. Mr. Slifka is also preceded in death by his parents; as well as two brothers Paul and William; three sisters, Helen Slifka, Eleanor Brittain and Mary Kelly. He leaves his brother Robert Slifka and Vera of New Middletown, OH, and two sisters, Pauline Bowen of Naples, FL and Ethel Slifka of Youngstown, OH. He also leaves two loving daughters, Carol McMichael and her husband Michael St. Clair of Leicester, NC, and Kathleen Adcock of Whitsett, NC. Among his other loved ones, he leaves four grieving grandchildren and their families; Edward J and Amy McMichael and their two children of Clearwater, FL, Molly and Robert McGall of Girard, Dawn and Henry Grosvenor of Mcleansville, NC and their two children, Christine and Coe Downing of Charlotte, NC and their two children. Ed was a member of St. Nicholas Church for 60 years and served as an usher there. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society and Lifetime Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and was also a member of the American Legion, the VFW 3538, the Tri-State Marine Corps League and the 5th Marine Division Association Lifetime member.
