Carol Joyce Ramsey Cyrus
Joyce died March 6th, 2014 after a 14 year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
There will be a grave side service for the immediate family of Carol Joyce Cyrus at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown, Ohio.
Joyce was born Dec. 6th, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of James and Wilda Black Ramsey.
She grew up at 17 Matta Avenue on the West Side, graduating from Chaney High School in 1945 and was married to Donald Clark Cyrus July 25, 1953 at the Chapel of Friendly Bells in Youngstown, Ohio.
After graduation, she worked as an operator for Ohio Bell, leaving to start her family in 1957. Joyce was a worker for the board of elections, and twice a regional supervisor for the U.S. Census. She started full time work again in 1970 at Strouss-Kaufmanns, Southern Park Mall in the men's furnishings department, outfitting countless customers with matching shirts, ties, and accessories for nearly 20 years. Joyce received the annual "Chairman's Award" numerous years for high sales and customer satisfaction.
Joyce was strong in her faith and instilled that same faith to her family. In her youth, she was a member of Mahoning Methodist Church and would tell of her enjoyment walking to church with her friends. Moving to New Middletown in 1955, she was a member of The Old Springfield United Church of Christ where she was a deacon, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a many year member of the Community All Faith Choir. We have many fond memories of her playing the basement piano and teaching us to harmonize the favorite hymns.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Embroiders Guild of America, (Joking that would fill up a line in her obituary.) She finished many detailed works in counted cross stitch, and left several unfinished heirlooms that were completed by her daughter-in-law Cindy. These won blue ribbons at the Canfield Fair after her failing to Alzheimer's.
Joyce and Don loved to travel searching for that next cool antique pick. Growing up, every year we had an incredible vacation trip traveling the U.S. and Canada, experiencing natures wonders from Florida to Maine, and even a two week summer driving trip (in a car with no A/C) across the old west to visit her aunt on the Kansas-Colorado border.
With her husband, Donald they celebrated 44 years of marriage before his sudden passing on March 15th, 1999.
Beside her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, First Lt. Victor Ramsey, Ellis Ramsey, and an infant daughter.
She will be sadly missed by her family, her children, Rex (Cindy) Cyrus of New Middletown, Jill Niddel of Fond du Lac Wisconsin; her grandchildren Ryan Niddel of Columbus, Matthew (Lynsey) Cyrus of New Middletown, Ashley (James) Gobel of New Middletown and Christine (Brent) Blawat of Slinger, Wisconsin; great grandchildren, that due to the disease she never knew, Haley Gobel, Colton Blawat, and on the way Amelia Cyrus.
There will be no calling hours.
Special thanks to St. Mary's Alzheimer Center and Sunrise for their excellent care.
