Bob, Jan and Tom...

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom and dad. I didn't think they could be apart for too long. I really can't imagine one without the other.

Although, I worked with Joe at the DeBartolo Corp. for only 5 years he gave me a lifetime of memories. Joe was the "Master Story Teller" and, boy, did he have the stories. To this day I still use some of his sayings. I believe Joe will never truely be gone because he will be alive in our thoughts and memories. I know he will be for me.

Thank You Joe!

Eric and Patty:

Dad loved his work and the people he worked with. He taught me that loving what you do makes it anything but a job! He told US the same stories when he got home so we got to laugh again with him.

He will be with us in everything we do.

Bob, Jan and Tom,

We are heartbroken on hearing of your father's passing. After your mother's passing in October, I wondered if he could stay away from her too long.

He was such an amazing man and I was blessed to be mentored by him. I looked forward to every day I worked with him. His work ethic was an inspiration to me and I still strive to be as good as he was. In your remembrance of him, you mentioned the stories and laughter. Geez, there were days we would loose control entirely and just laugh until we couldn't breath. I've been telling his stories or his sayings for years.

One story I'd like to tell. Years ago, working the midnight shift at DeBartolo's, I locked myself out of the computer room. It was 4:00 in the morning, and nobody was in the building but me. I had no choice to call your dad. I was so upset that I had to wake him and I was really nervous that he'd be pissed. I said, "Joe, I'm really sorry to wake you but I'm locked out." His response was pure "Joe". He said, "Ah, that's ok, I had to get up to answer the phone anyway."

The world is a sadder place without him. He's still with us, as long as we keep him in our hearts. (I've go to find a six back of Stroh's and drink a toast to him!)

Thank you, Mark and Cheryl.

My brother, Tom, and I were just looking at photos from my Dad's 60th birthday party with the old DeBartolo gang. He loved all of you. You were family to him.

Loved your "Joe" story. My Dad's sense of humor was unparalleled. He taught us to laugh, even through the darkest times. After my Mom passed and as his health declined, my Dad relied on me to help him through the day. A few weeks ago, he said, "Jan, I don't know what I'd do without you." I said, "Dad, I don't know what I'd do without YOU!" He said , "Well, I have a feeling you're going to find out pretty soon!" And despite the sad truth in those words, we looked at each other for a second, and then we laughed and we hugged.

And as you raise that bottle of Stroh's, Mark, and toast my Dad, make sure to use his classic line, "Here's looking up your address!"

Mark and Cheryl:

Thank you for the kind words and, as Jan said, the classic "Joe" story. I was always amazed how Dad could be sound asleep on the floor, the phone would ring at all hours of the night and he was instantly awake, alert and answering questions or solving problems with grace and kindness, always with a smile on his face.

Dad was a truly amazing man and he mentored many of us in LIFE, not just work. As I've told my sister so many times in the days since Dad passed, if I am HALF the man Dad thought I was, I am a good man. He was the best in my eyes.

Bob, Jan & Tom,
I was saddened to hear of Joe's passing and also Mary Lou a few months ago.
I worked with Joe in the Computer Dept at DeBartolo's for 20 years and he will be sadly missed. He was always there for me and my family. He trained me when I started there and I can not say enough good thing about him.
My condolences to you and your whole family.

Thank you, Mike. Dad was the greatest. He defined selfless. His giving to others had no end even until his end. We are grateful to have had him for as long as we did. What a blessing he was to everyone he came in contact with.
